It would appear that there are two different ways in which philatelic research and development are made:

1) By an individual who does it at their very own expense.

2) By a society that finances it from their own R & D fund.

Do you know of any societies that are funding philatelic R & D?

In my opinion, true scientific empirical work is not attached to $$$ motives. This is true for 'individual R&D' when the motive is to prove the existence of a variety that they own or anything else which is driven by making the 'researcher' more $$$.
