This January 23, 1985 twenty-two cent stamp of the USA commemorates the birth centenary of American composer Jerome Kern (1885-1945). Kern is shown working on a musical score with a pencil. From wikipedia, "A native New Yorker, Kern created dozens of Broadway musicals in a career that lasted more than four decades. His musical innovations, such as 4/4 dance rhythms and the employment of syncopation and jazz progressions, built on, rather than rejected, earlier musical theatre tradition."   |

On March 22, 1989 Papua New Guinea issued a four-stamp set commemorating International Letter Writing Week. The 20 toea value (Sc #707) of this set depicts a young boy writing a letter.  |

This U.S. 32c commemorative (Sc #2975o) is from the June 29, 1995 Civil War sheet of 20 different designs. Stamp depicts South Carolinian Mary Boykin Chesnut (1823-1886) writing in her Civil War diary using a dip pen. The diary was posthumously annotated and published on several occasions. From wikipedia, "She described the war from within her upper-class circles of slaveowner society, but encompassed all classes in her book... Mary Chesnut's Civil War (1981) won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1982."  |

On November 6, 1984 Norfolk Island issued a four-stamp set commemorating the death centenary of Rev. George Hunn Nobbs (1799-1884). Rev. Nobbs was an English missionary who worked with Pitcairn Islanders there, and later when they evacuated to Norfolk Island. The 30c value (Sc #352) of the set shows Nobbs as a teacher.  |

This June 6, 1988 1.40 franc stamp (Sc #887) of Liechtenstein promotes adult education. A man is shown taking notes while receiving a lesson via a transistor radio. This stamp is a joint issue with Costa Rica. That version of the stamp is shown on page 5 of this thread.  |

Here is the December 12, 1959 five sol airmail value (Sc #C161) from Peru's Personalities and Culture pictorial definitive series. Stamp depicts author Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616) who wrote Royal Commentaries on the Incas. From wikipedia, "The Commentarios Reales de los Incas is a book written by Inca Gacilaso de la Vega, the first published mestizo writer of colonial Andean South America...(He) was a direct descendant of the royal Inca rulers of pre-Hispanic Peru."  |

On October 17, 1991 the USA issued a 'Santa Claus' Christmas booklet of 20 stamps (5 designs: 5 panes of one block of 4 of each design). Value on each stamp (29c) is omitted. One of these stamps (Sc #2582) shows Santa checking his list of "who's naughty or nice".  |

This 45c stamp (Sc #1766) of Australia was issued on August 12, 1999 as part of a se-tenant block of 4 designs commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Stamp depicts an instructor holding chalk and her migrant students/workers holding pencils during an English class at Cooma. The set was also issued in self-adhesive format. From wikipedia, "The Snowy Mountains Scheme is a hydroelectricity and irrigation complex in south-east Australia. The Scheme consists of 16 major dams, 9 power stations, 2 pumping stations and 225 kms. of tunnels, pipelines and aqueducts that were constructed between 1949 and 1974."  |
