I have a few of these stamps with Survey Dept in the margins, are these official stamps? If not, what are they and where can I find them in a catalog?

I found them in the Scott catalog under Egypt (although inscribed "UAR"), Scott 525 and 531. Several others from 1961 are also inscribed "Survey Dept.". Regular postage stamps, not officials.

It's just a larger-than-normal credit for the printer, designer or artist. As a wild guess, the SURVEY DEPT was probably the printer (at least).

So these are under the regular issues of Egypt, Scott 524 and 531. Current catalogs clearly show the imprint in the illustrations for stamps of the period including 531.

Hy-brasil, you are correct. The stamps were printed by the Survey Department in Cairo. They did the printing for a number of other Arab Socialist countries, such as Yemen and Syria.

Thanks all. I was searching Egypt and Syria 1960's and must have flown right by it. Is there a market for this stuff? I have a few pages of Middle East countries that I'd like to sell so figured I'd pile the pages together and start them at .99 on eBay.

No market, I'm afraid. They are all cheap as chips.

There is in the US. Enough cheap stamps and it adds up. Country lots go better than area lots, but the latter is worth a shot.
