I'm hoping someone wiser than I can explain these for me. I have an 1865 and 1872 "Certificates of Profit" from two insurance companies of the time. These have the appearance of stock certificates, but they seem to have served a different purpose. I've only seen these for insurance firms, so it seems they had different financial instruments than typical companies. Any information about these would be helpful.
