I have over 100 of these stamped cheaques, small ones and large ones. SMALL – dates 1940 – 1948 LARGE – Dates 1931 – 1946 Do not know much about these items, or even if anyone collects them. Opinions appreciated. Robert

I am not sure if they are collected - though I have to assume they are - they are really nice and interesting. Thank you for sharing - it is amazing to me all of the different ways stamps have been used. |

Another Canada Revenue topic...
Van Dam lists only those indicia which are embossed on the cheque. There are seven varieties (FCH1-7), some pretty valuable.

I've got a binder full of the things. They used postage stamps, excise and war tax stamps and even meter stamps. These are a few that I have scanned already. It's interesting following the development of Canadian banking as banks merged. These are some corners of embossed cheque stamps I have my binder arranged by bank. |

Here's a 2¢ bill stamp (VanD# NSB3) on an 1879 promissory note. Stamps were also used on receipts and other legal documents |

Nonsense wert! Keep collecting them. You'll never know what you'll find. Here's a 1925 Royal Bank of Canada cheque with an embossed VanD#FCH1 war tax plus two FX36 excise stamps. I found a book while visiting St John's Nfld a few years ago called Canadian Banks and Bank-notes (C.S. Howard circa 1960) with a history of Canadian banks, showing when many of the early banks were founded, folded or were absorbed by others. The Toronto Bank merged with the Dominon Bank in 1955 and the Canadian Bank of Commerce joined together with the Imperial Bank of Canada in 1961 to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). The Bank of Montreal celebrated their bicentennial in 2017 and are the oldest bank in Canada. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the celebration creating a pile of graphics for various events. I would LOVE to be able to wade through their archives in Montreal. |

very interesting collection.
Maybe is a silly question but, why do they put stamps in cheques? To send as a mail/postcard? If so, was that practice safe? |

Quote: why do they put stamps in cheques? Guess: The stamps have implied "dual use / dual service" as Revenue Stamps, and to prepay postage. British stamps have "Postage and Revenue" on similar stamps of that era. |

The stamps were used to show that the duty levied by the government on the use of a cheque had been paid - they didn't go into the postbox. |
