I'm looking for information regarding 1972 Germany Munich Olympic postmarks. I've googled extensively, searched eBay, and searched the GPS (Germany Philatelic Society) journal index without success.

I've come across a large selection of cacheted cards (50+) with various city postmarks. The cachet and postmark say "Postage Stamps Advertise [promote] the Munich Olympics", "Mobile Exhibition", and/or "Postage Stamp Exhibition". The dates range from 4 April 1972 to 18 August 1972. There is only one city for each date in this accumulation.

I also came across a large selection (again 50+) of cards and covers with postmarks from various cities and showing a sport or event related to the olympics. These cards/covers have no cachets. They have a handwritten number notation in the lower left corner. Could this be a catalog ID number of some sort?

Any information regarding these items would be most appreciated. Thank you.

The German philatelic press would be the source of more info if they have archives available going back to 1972. I would be curious about whether 50+ cancels for the traveling stamp exhibit was a complete set of every city.

The second cover has a special cancel that commemorates a sporting event (handball) held at a specific location and date (Augsburg, August 26). Again, the question is which events had such cancels in the 1972 summer games. This type cancel has become part of most if not all Olympic games since then, summer and winter.

Thank you hy-brasil and vayolene! Very much appreciated.

hy-brasil: Exactly my question -- what is a complete list/inventory of the cacheted cards and the postmarks.

vayolene: Very helpful website! The listing shows the cards and covers for sale. I'll have to check my holdings against the listing and see how they match up. The cards/covers I have are for sale at 3 each.

I would really like to find a complete listing/inventory for these cards and postmarks. The joy of the hunt!

I've compared what I have with the website list.

a) Cacheted cards: I have all on the list plus one for Straubing 1.

b) For the postmarks (w/o cachet): I have some of those listed plus many that are not listed. The only sport specifically listed for Munich/Munchen 2 is gymnastics. I have the postmark with many other sports.

Certainly an interesting subject for further study!
