Hi,

I'm going through a stack of turn of the century postcards and do not know the correct way to list them.

This one is from Shiloh, GA and the writer is talking about measles. I have no idea how to start listing these postcards, would Shiloh be the interest, the card itself (Wait for me), the stamp, the conversation or all of it?

I would love some help on best way to list antique postcards, I have a big box of them.

Thank you so much. Pictures are rough, I know :)

My First Principle for organizing post & postal cards (not that I've organized mine) is simple: what is most important (to me, to The World) about each card?

For postcards, that can be the subject, or the technique used to print the card, or the country/locality.

For postal cards, that can be the type/subject of any pre-printed or individual message, or the country/locality.

For any type of card, it could also be a stamp, a postmark, a slogan cancel, a postal marking, an add-on (charity seal or airmail etiquette or ...)

The result is that a pre-printed postal card might end-up in the cool slogan pile or the rare postmark pile or the pretty stamp pile or the type-of-message pile ...

The problem is retrieval, eg, how to find all of the cards with a given slogan cancel when they might be in with the pretty stamps, or the rare postmarks, etc.

Some day, when I am no longer able to do things that are more interesting to me than organizing piles of post/postal cards, I will hire some quick-fingered teenager, and create an inventory of all of the things that interested me about each post/postal card so that I actually *could* find all some group of cards that I needed to find for an exhibit, a swap, old times' sake, etc.

YMMV.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Thank you both, I never knew about the Doane cancel, reading about it now.

I was planning to put these cards (easily over a 100, all turn of the century and various countries) up on eBay. Would you price them or put them in auction?

Right now I'm not sure if anything will even sell as my online sales have come to a near halt.

Thank you for the help!
