Request for the sharp eyes out there, town cancel that starts with VANKL_____, ONT or QUE. Nothing on the LAC Postal Archive. This isn't VANKLEET.

Thanks all - Chris

Thanks guys. I note the CDS has no info in the Postal History Society of Canada site (Split Rings), and nil on the Postal Archives. Appreciate the info. Chris

There are several split rings listed for Vankleek Hill in W. Bruce Graham's book Ontario Broken Circles, but yours isn't a split ring/broken circle, so they don't apply. Frank Campbell's Canadian Post Offices lists the Vankleek PO as opening in 1831.

I've been finding that if you search google for partial names with the country name you will often find the place name and can work back from there to ID the cancel. Works for beginning and end of name.

Are we sure it is a Vankleek Hill Ontario/Quebec town cancel...??
Library and Archives Canada does not recognize a post office being present in the town of Vankleek.

Robert

Also, the post office was built/used in the 1940's...See picture below.

Neil Stewart who served when the post office was established in 1827

Hi Robert - Vankleek Hill is in the the PHSC database of Split Rings:

https://www.postalhistorycanada.net...okenCircles/

The CDS database does not contain Verkleek Hill. Perhaps it existed during the 1885 -1900 timeframe.

Must just be a miss in the LAC archive?

Chris

According to "Ontario Post Offices" by Robert Smith, Vankleek Hill post office opened 6 July 1831 and was still open in 1988.
