I have a cover from East Germany with the 24pfg Month of the German- soviet friendship stamp attached. This stamp was issued on 1.12.1951 but the cover is cancelled on 23.11.51
Normal conclusion would be that this is a fake cancel, but why would a forger make such an obvious mistake or are there other possible explanations?

Or a clerk did not change the date in his canceller.

Hi Hans,

Did you check behind the stamps?

This is a first day cover for that issue… But used as a normal cover at 50 Pfg rate.

The pair issued in 1951 and the other stamp in 1952? May be a year error on the apparatus? A better receiver would have helped.

Check if you see a cancellation behind the pair.

Or the stamps arrived a bit early at the PO and some clerk used them without knowing that they weren't supposed to be used or another week.

The cover was sent to Holland ; The Hague -postbestelling (s'Gravenhage). The lower stamp was issued in 1952 as mentioned. It can be an error in the date…

The 2pf stamp was also issued in 1948 in the Soviet zone during the allied occupation. Only difference is the watermark.
Up till now I go for a mistake in the setting of the canceller combined with the use of this first day cover for normal correspondence ( but what are the chances of these two happening at the same time??)

Is the Käthe Kollwitz stamp from the 1948 Russian Zone issue?

This was still valid in 1951.
