Thanks to the help from the members here for directing me with my first few 3c Washington platings. I was able to do the last 3 on my own, but now I have one I can't figure out where to start, so your assistance is once again appreciated. I believe this is a Relief B, but I see no other recuts to help me out. The entire bottom frame line is missing, so I can't use a "heavy bottom frame line" to direct me to plate 4 like so many of my others have been. Also of interest, there is a red line that starts at the very left side just below Washington's chin level, and runs to the top of the lower left rosette. Is that a plate crack? Or is it just a secondary red cancel? Or what? If someone could direct me to the likely plate to start with based on other characteristics that I am not yet seasoned at recognizing, it would be much appreciated. |

Hi 40yearBreak. Nice to hear from you again. I suspect the red line you are describing is part of a red cancellation from a Boston circle date stamp. They routinely will accompany the PAID cancellation you see on your stamp.
Your stamp is a #11 (no inner frame lines). That narrows the possible plates down to 4, 6, 7 and 8. The top label block has been recut so that eliminates 6,7,& 8. This combined with the faint left outer frameline point to plate 4. I see a faint relief line along the left outer frameline at the nose that can help narrow down positions. Also the gap between the lower left frameline and the bottom left diamond block is larger than most on this plate so this should help narrow it down as well. Good luck with plating it.

Hi JamesG --
I am told by one of my plating mentors -- MSF -- who happens to also be a 1c blue specialist -- that he has plated and confirmed your strip of 5 (i.e., that you originally posted on 5/31) as positions 23-27R4.
Regards // ioagoa
PS -- It looks like the high resolution scan you posted earlier today seems to have been deleted ??? -- curious as to why? |

Don -- You are 100% correct -- my mistake -- please feel free to move (or copy) my post to the correct thread. Apologies for any confusion I may have caused. Regards // ioagoa

Wow, Thank You! I never got to the right plate - I was exhausted after comparing each of the 5 stamps to each of the C reliefs on the left plate! And, I notice in confirming his findings, that there are very few "plating comments" on any of these stamps in the 1c plating archive's plate 4 pages online. Strange that they don't have a copy of 25R4 shown either, but just 2 stamps to the right they have the strip of 3 including it (25) as an example! Thank You, Thank You!!! |

Jamesg, I would like your permission to put that strip in the archives. There is not much on plate 4 because of the lack of high res images. Could you send me a 1200 dpi scan of the strip to use? |

Harper1249 - thanks for the warm welcome back and for the guidance towards plating my 3c Washington. I have previously struggled recognizing that top label block recut, but after your comments I went and compared a bunch of plate 4 stamps to plate 7 stamps, and I think I see the difference now.
I will let you know once I think I have this plated. |

Looks like an orange brown. I see a plate mark at the bottom. Where should I start? |

Looks like a "B" relief, position dot lower right, recut upper left triangle (possibly), right frame line runs down a little long, two inner lines. I'd start with plate 2 late. |

Rlsny, it does have an OB appearance and nice impression but I agree with Moyock13. Its from Plate 2L thus making it a very nice 11A. A fairly quick scan of the plate 2L guide dot images on StampSmarter will point you to the position if want to try and plate it. The blue Philadelphia cds was used until January 1854 so that will help narrow down when this stamp was used. I'd guess the month is February, maybe April. https://stampsmarter.org/features/S...g.html#pill6Regards, Harper1249 |
