I haven't been there, but the flatmate of my daughter's boyfriend is a relative, and occasionally transports some of their goodies back to London. But the best pasties I've had were made by my ex's auntie, who was actually born in Yorkshire.

Your latest has a Dover postmark. The mark is just an artefact, maybe a piece of lint or some such.

One thing about these penny reds, and blacks, that intrigues me,

I know how the "rose engine" worked on the background scroll work,
but how did they manage Her Majesty's visage, clear of the scroll work?


Your "A-I" looks like a standard London Maltese Cross
has an extended right hand arm, to the central diamond.
(Pure guesswork)

I don't know Rod, but it is a very interesting question! Perhaps there was a void between the two vertical rows of engine turning, to leave space for the portrait? I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to this question myself.


Looks like a 75 to me Stamps4Life. It gives the impression the stamp was torn (very very carefully) by hand rather than cut with scissors.

Thank you. The visual Rod put up helped too. I see that the bottom tail of the 5 curled up more than I had imagined so that the little semi-circle to the right does indeed look like a little lint or hair!!

I have some .pdf on postmarks from the GBPS site, but none that show the marking with the 258. I have 258 listed as dover, but not actually what the cancel looked like. Do you perhaps have a link to share which will give me the actual cancel with ID?? Thanks again.

Yes Rod , a pretty strike! Tks for the visual also. I had asked on the ragged edges because I have a few stamps inscribed on the back, 'Roul' - guessing for rouletted and did not know if this was one?? I dont often see the rough edges.
