Quote: I know how the "rose engine" worked on the background scroll work, but how did they manage Her Majesty's visage, clear of the scroll work? I do not think the SG Specialised, volume 1, part 1, goes into the details of this. However. if I understand it correctly, the guilloche was applied to a piece of metal that was rolled into the die. The head was hand-engraved onto the die. I would think that if you cut out the shape of the head from the piece of metal with the guilloche, that will leave the area of the head unaffected when rolling it into the die. Then, you can engrave the head itself. |

Thank you NSK I'm happy to admit that I had to look up what guilloche is. Every day I learn something here |

Quote: I had asked on the ragged edges because I have a few stamps inscribed on the back, 'Roul' - guessing for rouletted and did not know if this was one?? I dont often see the rough edges. I tend to agree with Bobby, rouletted separation generally show flat spaces with "tufts" of paper in between See Line Rouletting in the following image I think your stamp has a few "dents" left hand edge, indicating pin perfs or similar. Perhaps some mischief from the previous caretaker ? Bib: Grossman US Handbook |

For me it was a toss-up between plates 56 and 74. I've chosen the latter.
Note the PA stamp is laid down to the right of the QA stamp, ie: they're not exactly aligned vertically. |

Rod - something here for everyone! Postmarks, plating, etc…. A bit ago you commented on one of the MX cancels. Meant to say - I got a bunch of those awhile back to plate before I knew what I didn't know. They are not in good shape for plating - haha. But to me, the cancels look the same. When I get more gumption, I'm going to keep trying to learn them. Topic of a new thread?? |

Quote: what's PA stand for? The stamp above yours, of which you can only see the bottom frame line. I used it to help me plate the QA stamp. |

out of curiosity, I redid the measurements and looking at the results ( 4- 4- 5- 13- ) , Plate 5 comes up. But due to the cancel, its too late for such an early plate, right?? Plate 5 has 3 states. |

I don't know what those measurements are about. I'm happy to use my eyes.
That aside, yes, plate 5 is too early for the type of postmark on the stamp. |
