Michael - sadly, the first thing about it is that, irresoective of the catalogue number, it's wrecked.

Dear GeoffHa,

It may not be in the best condition but it still has the 4 wide margins.
A stamp with its original gum, yet deteriorated by age and was hinged.
If it is RARE 596 stamp it can certainly be qualified by experts with a grades.

Best regards,
Michael

Take a 597, the one cent coil. Compare this stamp to it. IF the DESIGN of this stamp is EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE as the design of the coil, then it's a 596. If more people would do this then there would not be 200 posts a year asking about some stamp being a 596.

Confirm the perforation rate first. The photos are skewed, but I am not convinced this is 11x11, but rather 11x10.5 A scan is much better than a photo, both the stamp alone and then scans against a perforation gauge.

Michael - There are all sorts of idiots on ebay - they aren't a guide to life. And that isn't "a little damage" - it's considerable damage.

I know that ebay is not an option to see the same cancellation on stamp but I see the same cancellation on The Siegel Galleries who is presented as 594 stamp with certification.
I will give just 3 example with the same cancellation on that site.
1.https://siegelauctions.com/display_....php?id=2433

2.https://siegelauctions.com/display_....php?id=2444

3.https://siegelauctions.com/display_....php?id=2494

Thank you for your time.
If this is 594 in this damage condition is not 0$.

Stop measuring the stamp, it is not going to help you ID the stamp. The dimensions given in catalogs are an approximation, the tolerances are too small to be useful. Stamp Smarter had instructions for making a template.

Spend time searching this community to find dozens and dozens of threads who people who have come into the forum swearing they have a 594. In the 15 years this forum has never, ever had anyone find a 594. Every person argued that they had one, not a single person actually did. They printed billions of stamps of this design, there is virtually zero chance that you will find a 594.

The cancel on the stamp has nothing to do with whether it is a 596 or 594. Post office didn't care what 1c stamp was on the envelope when they applied to cancel, and it appears on other stamps as well.

You originally thought it might be a 596, and then suddenly switch to 594?!? Just because of the cancel?

I would suggest accepting Don's post. But if you still think it might be a 596 for some reason, then accept the suggestions to directly compare to a 597 and/or 581 to convince yourself it isn't a 596.

I wish Scott would put a conspicuous note next to #596 listing to tell people to quit relying on ruler measurements to ID the stamp.
