Greetings, I'm a retired casual collector, having started in childhood. Enjoy US, and my heritage countries of Norway, Sweden, Germany. I was recently asked by the leader of the local stamp club to do a series of presentations on the Washington Franklin series as I had bought some packets of 2 cent reds during one of our club auctions, to practice identifying the different types. This lead to a real interest in the series, and I'm now working on completing my collection of the series as far as the budget will take me. Being a retired engineer, I tend to get bogged down on details, so I've purchased some basic reference materials (Martin Armstrong's two books and one by Micarelli -- which seem to be the standards for these issues). Right now I'm trying to get a better understanding of how the different varieties came to be (for example, do the Types I, II, and III varieties of the 2 cent rotary press occur on the same plate? and minutiae like that). Feel free to contact me if you want to talk about WF's!

Quite familiar with the 1847 website -- the new iteration is really excellent. The stories about the many different varieties of this series as found in the references I mentioned earlier, are incredibly interesting, and add to the enjoyment of collecting. My first presentations on the series at our local club were very well received, and for the most part, unknown to most of the members. Unfortunately, Covid ended the meetings after the first two. One of the reasons I want to dig into more details, such as issue dates, plate numbers and the like, is that with so many forgeries out there (particularly for coils), these identifying features can help avoid acquiring an expensive common issue. I recently avoided bidding on a supposed 491 by seeing that a postmark was evident, and the date was prior to the present earliest known cancelation date. Thanks all for the welcome.
