Hello all Stamp Masters,

I was wondering if you could tell me more about this Cancel.
Usually the name of the city is on a slightly smaller cancel on top.
Here it is on the bottom.
To the right of it you see the lettering "...NZIE".
Is that a Lloyd Agency Cancel which reads "LLOYD AGENZIE"?

Is there anything else of note on this cancel?
Is that cancel rare? Or more common?

Thanks!

Hi LordInVader,

Yes, this is a postmark from the Lloyd Agency in Smyrna/Izmir.

I've not seen this one before but it has the same format as one of the postmarks of the Lloyd Agency in Salonica/Thessaloniki.

Nor I,
On Perf12 example, is that "Agenzie" ? does not seem to fit.
Nigel, if you have any scans of Agency CDS's I'd appreciate to see them.

What I have, may / may not be of interest.

Thanks for the great info so far, very helpful!
Do you know if this was ONLY used as transit stamp? Or also as Postage?

Hi Johann and Rod,

I recognise the scan starting "(4) FOREIGN LINES".

This is taken from Stamps of the Russian Empire Used Abroad, Part Two: The Black Sea & Aegean Ports, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Crete, Ship Mail in the Levant by S. D. Tchilinghirian and W. S. E. Stephen (BSRP, 1958).

The LLOYD AGENZIE / SALONICHIO postmark I referred to is illustrated in Austrian Post Offices Abroad, Part Five: Greece, Crete, Aegean Islands, Macedonia by the same authors (Austrian Stamp Club of Great Britain, 1964).

This was also used in the normal way, cancelling stamps on covers from Smyrna.

I've also seen it used on pre-stamp covers from Smyrna.

Thanks Nigel for the citation.
I have broadcast the citation many times in the Turkey Thread.
The Austria scan, then again is...
"Stamps of the Levant Post Office"
D.B.Armstrong 1913

As an aside,
I just came across this reference to "Stamps removed for checking, and re-affixed"
This is the only second time ever I have seen broadcast reference to this, in Philately, the other, an Exhibition frame of Advanced Siam, where the stamp was removed, to facilitate cover restoration.
Source Corinphila Auction of the Levant 2019
(Nice reference to sea carriage postage as well)
