The Birth of Rama and his Marriage to Sita

Dasharatha, King of Ayodhya, had three wives: Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumithra. Rama, his eldest son, was born to Kausalya. The others sons were Bharata, Shatrughna and Lakshmana.

King Janaka of Mithila had arranged a contest (Swayamvara) and announced that the winner would marry his daughter, Sita. Each competitor had to lift the divine bow gifted by god Shiva and string it.

In revenge, Ravana sent the demon Maricha, in a form of a deer to isolate Sita. When Rama tried to captivate the deer, Ravana used his enormous power to carry Sita away, flying with her to Lanka.
