These are called "SILENT PRECANCELS" which include a group of lines, bars, rules, letters, "ticket punches" and designs as illustrated in David W. Smith's 210 page, spiral bound, 95%+ color illustrated book on the subject he published in 2016, with "off-" and "on-cover" catalog prices.
The subject of "Silent Precancels" is difficult and complex, only because many appear the same. Many times, identify a "Silent" correctly, you need to place your stamp next to the image, to get an exact match; for lines and rules you may have multiple city, state matches.
I spent eight (8) hours over three afternoons with a very close friend, who is an advanced precancel specialist, trying to identify his "Silents." We BOTH had problems correctly identifying what we thought were simple "silent cancels" -- were we wrong about that one. So, I'm giving you my best "guesstimate" on this one. So, PLEASE, NO ROCKS, STONES or used stamp hinges if I'm in error.
Here are my best guesses:
TOP LINE//Upper Right Hand Corner (#1) : BELFAST, MAINE TYPE A: 2 BARS; 8mm-12mm Overall Length (OAL); 3.75-4.5mm W//3-3.75mm apart. Used by : DANA Sarsaparilla Co. $50. off cover; $ 500. on cover. TYPE B: 2 BARS; 8mm-11.25mm Overall Length (OAL); 3-3.5mm W // 5 -5.5mm apart. Used by : DANA Sarsaparilla Co. 50¢ off cover; $ 50. on cover.
TOP LINE///2ND, FROM RIGHT (#2) ALBANY, N.Y. Description: SINGLE BROAD, VERTICAL BRUSH STROKE 1 vertical line 4-6mm W; Ruled smooth brush stroke; INK:--most Brownish-Grey ink. Used by: Diamond Paste Co., $15. off cover. $60. on cover.
TOP LINE////Upper Left Hand Corner (#3, #4): SOUND BEND, IND. Description: 3 Horizontal or Vertical Bars;3-3.5mm W/5mm apart/19-20mm OAL./ Coarse Appearance Used by: South Bend Foundry Co. $10. off cover. **Similar Type: 18mm, or less OAL > ROCHESTER, NY - TYPE F > IF SHINY INK = BROCKPORT, NY -- TYPE B)
BOTTOM - RIGHT CORNER (#5) TOPEKA, KANSAS. Description: 3 LINES (appears struck twice) 2-2.75mmW, 6mm apart. Used by: Hall Lithographing Co. $10. off cover. $200. on cover.
BOTTOM - LEFT CORNER (#6) Description: 5-LINES. 2mmW; 1-2mm apart, 12-14mm OAL; IRREGULAR OUTLINE Used By: ???? $20 off cover.
So again, the above are my best guesses. PLEASE, slings & arrows if in error. Without placing "silents" side-by-side against established images, it is impossible to accurately identify what you have.
Stay safe!
Best, Hal
