The Bureau of Engraving & Printing called these Compound Liquor stamps and Internal Revenue labelled them Imitation Wine. In either case they qualify as rectified spirits. Images from a course in Distilled Spirits stamps recently presented as part of the APS Summer Seminar.
They were first issued in 1872 and feature two living portraits: William Tecumseh Sherman and Ullyses Grant (who was the president in 1872!).
