Hi Rod; you made a post in another stamp forum on (Jun 21, 2014 at 2:00pm ) anyway; you showed the same stamps.... So to make a long story short; When the nice japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies; they did not like the Dutch and other mean europeans. They did not trust the Chinese either but they were tolerated to a certain extent.(some were sent to camps with the Dutch). The Japenese political agenda was for the recognition of the Indonesian people;thus Independance from the Dutch.that being said; the Japanese political domination was on the island of Java and it's capital Batavia. The Japanese encouraged revolutionary leaders like Sukarno and others. In the naval occupied areas they did not like the word revolution, so harsh treatment for the small time revolutionaries in those areas.Famine and execution. In 1945 the Japanese could no longer keep in check all of Islands and groups proclaiming Repoeblik Indonesia (on your stamps). Thus at the end of the war Sumatra overprinted occupation stamps were re-overprinted with the Independant Indonesian overprints. They can be classified especialy for Sumatra like the ones you have.Java has other types.

Rod,
Five of your six stamps have the general Sumatra overprint which was applied from January 1944 in Medan. It consists of the symbol of the Japanese Postoffice (the thing that looks like a T with a bar over it, it's actually a katakana character.), Sumatra in 4 katakana characters across the lower bar, and Dai Ni-hon Tei-koku Yu-bin (Postal service of Great Imperial Japan) in 7 kanji characters across the top. The stamp with the star is from Aceh (Achin) from 1942.
The first five stamps were subsequently overprinted by the Republic of Indonesia. The cloverleaf overprints read either ORI, NRI, or PTT URIPS and indicate a currency change.

Thank you all, P12, Johan, and Jan. I have posted before, but were in my "too hard" category. I'll save all this good information, in the folder for the future. Albeit, I do not come across this material often.

Been reading the headlines of that period, Not a great deal offered. 9th February 1942 Japanese land on Singapore. Just 5 days later, they invade Sumatra (14th-20th February)
14 days later the battle of the Java sea. Allies lost 5 cruisers and 9 destroyers in 24 hrs. Later, HMAS Perth (cruiser) was sunk, along with USS Houston . Lest we forget.
