They were produced as shown. The flag section you reference used the dominant foreground color, one in brown(ish) and one in black/gray for the respective values.

rod222: "Russia likes to have the year of emission on it's stamps, and they are to be applauded for that.
If the year of emission is otherwise shown on the stamp, then year of passing is also noted, if not, the last year shown is emission year."

Hello.
At the 17th Congress of the U.P.U., held in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1974, it was agreed that the stamps should bear the year of issue printed, but not all countries paid attention.
The Chinese have the year, the number of the series of that year and the place it occupies in the series, they are the easiest to identify.
Regards.

Thank you. I really should have known that. 40 years ago I left Hanau, West Germany (FRG) after a 2 Year tour. The German Flag hung right outside my window. In the photo below it is at half staff alongside the US Flag in honor of eight soldiers who died in April 1980 trying to rescue hostages.

To be fair, the GDR/DDR flag you show for 1949-1959 is also the Weimar flag of 1919-1933 and the BRD from 1949-present.

Right, but the Weimar flag or the BRD flag could hardly be shown on a propaganda Soviet stamp ("Democracy and Socialism") from 1950

Yes, I recall that. A decade of trauma for me, I was 20yo sailor aboard a tiny destroyer, when we moved to dock at Subic Bay in the Philippines, alongside the remains of the USS Frank E Evans.
Terrible terrible. The world had lost its innocence.
