All,

I was contacted by another collector who asked me if I knew anything about Rawlins, MO. He had a copy of a cigarette tax stamp I had seen many times. Not sure what caused him to look it up, but imagine his surprise when he could find nothing on the internet.

So, postal history buffs - is anyone able to come up with anything on Rawlins, Missouri?

Here is a scan of the stamp:

No Rawlins Mo post office listed on Jim Forte's site, but finds a Rawlins po office in Georgia, Kansas, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

The collector stated he could find a major Rawlins Road, but no indication of a village/town/city with that name.

There are some examples of towns in Colorado that changed their names, so you can find tax stamps with both names, but they show up when you look the names up.

Any chance you have more info, like an actual location or internet link?

Thanks!

"City" implies a place of large enough size to have a P.O., which doesn't appear to be the case here, thus I wonder if this is a "made up" town for purposes of a salesman's sample?

A printing error. MO instead of WY. Listed under Rawlins, Wyoming.

Well, crap.

That's embarrassing!!!

In my defense I did say I had seen it many times. I was puzzled why I didn't find it in the MO pages...

redwoodrandy - Thank you for solving it!
