I've been looking for postmarks from German states that did not issue stamps of their own. Here is a draft exhibit page of Thurn and Taxis stamps postmarked in the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, in Thuringia.

jogil: thanks much for sharing that link. When I clicked on it, I saw that I already have the site bookmarked, probably for Poland and Portugal, which are two of my specialty areas. But, it is good to see the link again as then others can learn about it. As an aside, I've had it bookmarked, from this SCF web site, at least a couple years.

My starting point for this project was this list of German states along with the postal services they used:

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~wyatt/ger1871.html

From there, I looked for the main towns of each country, and then searched for them in databases of numerals used in postmarks, especially https://www.stampsx.com/ .

For Thurn and Taxis, I compiled lists from several sources, and looked up the locations of towns.

That's a very interesting website on the old German states. Worth looking at, for sure. I wish the main map was enlargable as you really can't see the German states on it very well, and there are no separate state maps in each separate listing which, would be helpful.

The "brief history" for each state is very interesting and helps me understand them better.

Finally, I have never understood why anyone ever cared about who owned the very tiny and completely useless island called Heligoland, but the Germans sure worked themselves up into a frenzy over it.

Thanks for posting.
