I am quite new with Australian postage due stamps and try to match my Scott catalogue numbers with the SG ones that are certainly more detailed. I can't find any decription for the following SG numbers:D10, D11, D12, D13, D14, D16, D21, D41, D84, D88, D89, D90,D99, D101, D103 and D104. Someone can help me ?

Suzlou, I'll further complicate things by offering the Bible We have a Postage Due specialist onboard at SCF, but if he does not respond, I'd suggest you offer the requirement information, for any stamp ID, being the watermark and the perforation guage. It is a specialist discipline, with that information, I can translate into Scott for you The Bible. |

Thank you Rod for your kind answer. The bible you suggest is very probably the best source of information but it could be too much challenging for my needs. I am just trying to mount a basic collection and the SG classification could be enough for me since it's the one most often used on eBay. My Scott classification is definitely out of game. |

Hi Suzlou53, Like you, I'm fairly new to Australian postage due and am doing something similar: converting from Scott to Stanley Gibbons wch is, as you say, more detailed. My copy of Gibbons Commonwealth and British Empire isn't current, so I may not be much help, but here goes: The stamp in your scan appears to be design Type D1, so it could be SG D2, D9, or D12, depending (as Rod indicates) on perforation. (In Scott, therefore, either J2, J2a, or J2b.)
The following Gibbons numbers do not appear at all in my catalogue: D11, D16, D21, D84, D89, D90, D99, D101, D103, D104. Gibbons has either skipped or removed them for some reason. SG D10, however, is included, described as design Type D1, watermark Type D2, 2d emerald-green, perf 11 ½, 12, compound with 11. SG D12 is same design and watermark Types, 1d, same color, perf 11. SG D13 is design Type D3, still watermark Type D2, again 1d, same color, perf 11 ½, 12. SG D14 is same design and watermark Types, 2d, same color and perf. SG D88 is design Type D7, watermark W w 11, 1d, carmine and apple green, perf 14.
If you need Scott numbers, let me know and I'll try to help with that as well.

Hi EMaxim, Many thanks for these precious informations, it will be very helpful for my future searches on eBay. If I ever find stamps that are not listed in the basic SG numbers, I will come back with new posts in this forum. Best ! Louis |

Louis,
Welcome to my world!
The stamp pictured is a very nice one. It is SG D9, perf 11 in the horizontal and 11.5, 12 in the vertical. In addition there is a constant flaw on the base of the second 'N' of 'PENNY'.
There were three perforating machines used in the green postage due stamps. They gauged 11, 11.5 and 11.8. There is only a small differential between the last two and distinction between them has been deleted from subsequent editions of the catalogue shown by Rod. Gibbons deal with this by describing the perforation as 11.5, 12, effectively combining perfs from the two machines.
First series: space at foot D10 is the 2d value with the same perforation configuration as the 1d shown. D11 is not listed. As stamps were discovered and catalogue numbers allocated, the editors at SG would leave space for anticipated isued. They were not always correct. D12 is perf 11 all round and very scarce, especially in mint condition.
Second series: design complete, wmk Crown over NSW D13, D14. The former is the 1d value, the latter 2d perf 11.5, 12 all round. The 1d is very scarce. I have not seen D14. Many times the 2s perf 11.5, 12 is mistakenly identified as the 2d value. D16 as D11 above D21 as D11 above D41 as D11 above D84 as D11 above D88 as D11 above D89 as D11 above D90 as D11 above D99 as D11 above D101 as D11 above D103 as D11 above D104 as D11 above
The copy of the Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue shown by Rod is the 1999 first edition. A subsequent edition in 2014 was a vast improvement on the first edition, but with some serious typesetting errors. A third edition came out this year and is excellent. New South Wales and Victoria Postage Dues are included now.
For a serious but general collector, Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth will suffice.

I am working on a comparison table for cat numbers across SG, Scott and the ACSC and will offer this when complete.

Thank you John, all this is very helpful and greatly appreciated.
I am sure that your comparison table will be very useful too. The second set (NSW wmk with completed design) appears very tricky to me when just looking at the stamps I already have. Some are perforated 12x11,5 (5p,1/), some others 12x11 (6p,8p,10p,2/,5/) but I have one 11x12 (2p) and one perf. 11 (4p). Looks like that a complete collection of this set would count many many different stamps.
About the stamp pictured it's not from my collection of course. It comes from a collection of pictures I keep as references.
Thank you again very much,
Louis |

Yes, thank you John. You've helped us both, and taken gone to some trouble to do so. It's what makes this forum so good: the help we can get from more knowledgeable collectors. |
