Dale
I'm so out dated (figured that out my first post)
I ordered some new ones off eBay
But unfortunately they ain't coming anytime soon
Didn't look where they where coming from just happy about the price
So I'm trying to use what I got
These old books and the net
My local libraries are closed due to covid
And it's a 40 minute drive to another or even
A book store

Quote:
If the design has no crown, we look at the two dots inside the diamond shapes (rhombi) that form the pattern of the groundwork.

Yup emaxim
gave you a shout out for the time and help
I confused the dots as a means to double check if there was
No phantom crown present

Between my old book and sites Like
https://www.stamp-collecting-world....ps_1917.html
Or
https://rusphil.com/russian-empire-...h-issue-1908
Plus what ever I can find on here or anywhere else really
Is how I try to figure things out
And then I find more questions as I go
Like what is a "3 Perl " then look it up
If I can't figure it out I'll as a question

Does this look like wove?
I see lines going right to left
Do horizontal lozenges make them?
Didn't get to see the back of any Other #138
Just a chart of different appearances of the paper
Better ask then assume

I'll just assume it's a #138b
Horizontally lozenge
With a perforation of
13 1/2 x 13 1/4
And move on...

So I managed to get my hands on a couple Scott's 2009-10 catalogues
Let's see if my answers are in there
Should solve the Issues I keep going threw
Although at first glance it doesn't seem like it
I've gotta spend some time going threw them
But 138b doesn't work in the newer catalogue
That would be a imperf With horizontal lozenges
My old book didn't say that

The lozenges are varnish added on the front of the stamp. We can't see which type they may be unless you show the front of the stamp. What colors are it?

138b does work if there is horizontal lozenges and they make that impression
But I don't see anything
Opinions?

And then the perforations 13 1/2 x 13 1/4
Newer book needed?
Or am I doing something wrong?

The two gauges I used

I just used the one side to show 13 and 13 1/2 are off
13 1/4 fits
The top and bottom of the stamp are 13 1/2
Is there something in a newer catalogue?
It was a big jump from 1965-2010

Either Scott 138 or 138b depending on orientation of varnish lozenges. Perf 13.5 x 13. Just as in the Scott catalog.

So I'm using the perforation gauge wrong!
And wove looks like that on the back
Or doesn't matter!
It's the front varnish that counts
I've posted pics of the 138-138b
Any opinion on the lozenges
Vertical or horizontal?
Or is there another trick to see them clearer?

Tried different lighting and angles
And matching the perforations to the 3.5 should be the same
Close enough?
Still not knowing what lozenges are there vertical or horizontal
I'd expect it to stand out (first time looking at them)
