This maybe a stupid question but is this a common thing? I've never seen this before but I also don't research airmail covers.

Look at the date and post mark of this cover, same as you , except with a stamp, they are philatelic covers bring to the post office to cancel them in bunch, they simply forget to put a stamp on yours's and the post office clerk don't notice it.
