I'm looking for ideas as to why someone would carefully write "Canal Zone" on this stamp.

Looking at how the ink bleed at the torn part of the perforations, it appears that the lines were added after the stamp was separated from the neighboring stamp.

It came in a junk pile, off paper. So I have no context.

Thoughts?

Once again, the philatelic significance of this curious stamp has been lost when it was removed from its cover.

It is possible that this was a collector's label for an envelope of stamps. I have seen collections/accumulations where a box of stamps has envelopes of stamps with labels, or a stamp indicating what is in each envelope.

It was in a mixture of US, Canal Zone and Cuban stamps. They were all about the same vintage.
