Help With Rate Make-Up And Cancels Needed

Ship cover, U.S.S. Euryale, sent registered from Hawaii to Washington, D.C. Mailed July 11, 1945, as attested by three New York Ship/Navy cancels. Rec'd at San Francisco July 13th and in D.C July 14th and 16th.

The U.S.S. Euryale was at Pearl Harbor during this time frame.

The ship was purchased by the Navy in April, 1943, in New York. That might explain the possible issuance and subsequent use of New York ship/Navy cancels being used aboard the ship.

Any additional info regarding the New York cancels and the make-up of the rate would be appreciated.

littleriver, when I originally posted I had a write-up and pics, but when I went back later to see if any responses had been rec'd there was nothing there but the title. Chevelle

6 cents was the 1/2 oz. airmail rate for to/from a service member outside the continental US. (Beecher & Wawrukiewicz pp 20,22 and table 8.2)

With 71 cents total paid, less the 6 cents airmail rate, we are left with 55 cents.
That is exactly the registry fee for a declared value of $100.01 to $200.00 beginning 26 March 1944. (Beecher & Wawrukiewicz table 35-3).

jleb1979, thanks very much for the response. You sent me in the right direction with just one correction: After paying the 6¢ air mail fee the remaining amount is 65¢ which corresponds to the registry fee for an item with declared value between $200.01 to $300.00. Thank you again for your help.

Agree with the analysis of postage and registration fees paid. The first ship postmark, USS Eurhale, would indicate this ship was based out of NYC but mailed this item at San Francisco and it then went by air to Washington. Hopefully, someone who specialized in WW II era navy ships can comment on this assumption.

I wrote 71-6=65 on a pad of paper and then went to the next table and focussed on the 55 cent rate.
Clearly needed another cup of joe this morning.

I agree with the original poster, the USS Euryale was at or very near Hawaii at this time. The letter was obviiously posted on board her. The question that seems to remain is "what is the '10954 Br' cancel? Something between the USS Euryale and San Francisco. Is it a land-based postal branch on Hawaii or a roving supply/mail ship which took the letter into Hawaii where it flew to San Francisco, then eastward, etc. Corrections? Thoughts?

Appears as if the 10954 BR cancel is Pearl Harbor Submarine base.
