I suppose that a 17th century wig could also be considered as a headdress. King Louis XIV, the Sun King Designer & Engraver : Pierre Gandon Scott B184 |

Hi Eli - beautiful stamps and the postcard! Here is strange (but common then) hairstyle from a Kabuki actor at the end of 18th century. Japan 1 November 1956 / Philatelic Week / Ichikawa Ebizo print by Sharaku The woodcut print artist was know for short time activities, only 10 months from 1794 to 1795. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharaku |

This is a woman role played by a man, from Kabuki theatre. The role is a married woman in middle age, I guess - and I am not sure how common this type of decorative ( comb and hairpins) hairstyle was in that time.. Japan 6 October 1988 / International Letter Writing Week / Chiyo in "Iwai Kyusaburo" by Utagawa Kunimasa The woodcut print artist Utagawa Kunimasa (1773 - 1810) was known for his Kabuki actors portrait in Ukiyo-e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utagawa_Kunimasa |

This is typical "Geisha" style, which you can still see them now in Geisha house in Kyoto (if you are in one area the right moment, or pay to be entertained). Japan 19 April 1988 / philatelic Week / "Obi (belt)" painting by Torii Kotondo (or 5th Kiyotada, 1900 - 1976) The artist is classified into Modern era. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torii_Kotondo |

And these are images of "in action", more casual way in early 20th century. Japan 2 April 1987 / Philatelic Week / "Combing Woman" & "Make Up" by Goyo Hashiguchi (1880 - 1921) The artist was known for Japanese Art Nouveau, and designed many book covers and printings for his contemporary novelists. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goy#333;_Hashiguchi |

Sisters: elder has long hair, the younger has modern short hair. When this was painted, the modern facilities (such as train, electricity and weaving machines) have arrived to the country, and people are shifting little by little, from traditional style to modern and practical. Japan 20 April 1969 / Philatelic Week: "Hair" painting by Kokei Kobayashi (1883-1957) |

Many thanks, tomonakaazu, for the great Japanese stamps! I have one from Czechoslovakia issued on November 3, 1991, shows painting of women with very special hairdos by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 – 1806): |

Wow, Eli - beautiful intaglio to represent the woodcut print by Utamaro. They must be 'Oiran', high rank entertainers in Geisha houses - and they should have been tough to hold up their heads with lots of pins... must be heavy!! Here I am trying my image compress to show intaglio executions larger/better format, with French headdress which looks also heavy, with jewellery on.. France 19 May 1999 / Art: Auch Cathedral stained glass / design: C. Bridoux, engrave: J. Larriviere |
