The Stamp Smarter PSE certification database has been updated with approximately 4200 new certs since last update. It now includes certs through 01/06/2021.
Important Note:This update includes 84 revisions to existing certifications.
As far as we can tell, PSE does not track revisions but rather simply makes changes while keeping the original certification number. Ideally they would simply add a revision number/letter field to the database, keeping the original cert number untouched and then appending the revision field to the end of the certification number (i.e. #1229459-A, #1229459-B). Lorry and I have previously discussed adding a revision history feature to the Stamp Smarter database but felt it important that we maintain consistency with the PSE database.
I am unsure how other certification organizations handle revisions but I suspect they also do not track them. In my opinion this is a misstep from both a data integrity standpoint and a marketing perspective. Consumers/hobbyists place significant value on transparency and provenance; being able to understand certification histories greatly assists in making buying decisions. Additionally the certification industry is built upon developing trust, the lack of a revision history erodes this trust.
But regardless of my opinion, the lack of a revision history means that older auctions/sales may have a certification which is different than the current certification. Don
