New Precancels Added Today

Here are some precancels just added to my various collections. These were all on my want list, so illusive. CV's 1 to 90 US $ Discussion welcome.

Precancels are super interesting. Seeing that Vassar stamp made me chuckle. I grew up about 30 miles from Vassar (a small city), only I lived even more rural. It just amazes me that so many tiny post offices would all have these precanceled stamps. I think it's great, but it still amazes me. Congrats on adding them to your collection.

The third stamp in the first row is from Pawtucket, RI. My mother was born and raised there. Pawtucket's claim to fame is the Slater Mill, featured on Scott 2348 in 1990. The mill is said to be the first successful cotton mill in America and is an important part of the beginning of the industrial revolution in the USA. Today it is the centerpiece of an excellent small museum complex and well worth a visit.

as a novice, myself, are you able to explain the verbiage of the different types, that you guys use, please?

The website mentioned precancels.com has loads of information. But about verbiage and terms: US precancels are classified in two groups. Bureau prints and Local prints. Bureaus are made at the BEP at the time the stamps are printed. Local prints are made at the local post offices. Most Local prints are done with devices ordered and supplied though Washington DC and fabricated by the current government contactor. Other Local prints are done with devices fabricated by local post office suppliers. None of the above pictures are Bureau prints. Nine are Local prints with DC supplied devices. Eleven are Local L-types. It is not always easy to distinguish - you need the PSS catalogs in many cases. The local devices supplied by DC are identified in the PSS Town & Type catalog, eg Havre is PSS-546, Cameron is PSS-559. Waterville is L-1.

Chasa - Beautiful group of precancels, thanks for sharing and thanks for explaining the different types for us novices in this area of stamp collecting. Some of yours I have never seen before. I found this one scanned below in a mixture I was sorting today. The town is Saint Ansgar, Iowa, and it is a small town of 1000+ people in northern Iowa. Is this a local L-type?

Thanks for the reference to the precancel society and the link. I am learning that each aspect of collecting has its speciality and I can't do them all, but I have to look into this area with a fresh eye.
