Australia 1929 Centenary Of Western Australia Re-Entry

Well I've done the rounds, and it seems there's been no detailed plating study done on this issue.

The local dealers don't know of any plating study. The local philatelic society's library has no plating study.

Virgin territory it would seem. An opportunity for young up and coming philatalists to get their teeth into. A book in the offing?

Mind you, 12 steel plates were used in the printing. Each comprised 80 impressions (8 horizontal rows of 10). That means there were 960 individual/different cliches produced.

Plating them is a big job at this late stage because of the difficulty of obtaining full sheets - or even part sheets. And, there's likely to be more variations than stamps because some of the flaws would have been slow in developing.

I'm confident that many of the flaws and variations have been written about in years gone by. I'm currently wading through copies of the old "Australian Stamp Monthly" which, as I understand it, commenced publication around 1929. So there has to be a chance the Western Australian Centenary swan will get some critique therein.

If/when I find anything from that source, rest assured I'll post it here.

Do we know the process of making the cliches?

I have 100's of ASM but not #85
A rough guess, it will be January 1938 or close to it.




Earliest I have is February 1936
They did not show "whole numbers" then but inscribed Vol 7 Number 2
That suggests it was whole number #74

I've been through Vol 9, No 1, January 1938. Unfortunately, I found no reference there to the WA Centenary issue.

The Jan '38 ASM has a number of variations of the of 2d Jubilee, which make sense given the Jubilee was issued in May1935.

Any ASM critique on the WA Centenary has to be earlier - closer to 1929 or so - given the issue was released in September 1929.

I'll keep looking and keep you posted.

So, if my arithmetic is still good, that should make it Volume 8, Number 2, February 1937.

Well, I've found Volume 8, Number 2, February 1937 and been through it.

Nothing on the WA Centenary stamp in that issue.

I've also been through the January 1937 edition as well as May and July editions of that year - on the off chance that it may have been in an earlier or later edition. Nope. Nothing.

Perhaps #85 is Volume 8 Number 5, which would mean it's the May edition. However, given I've been through that edition as well, there must be something I'm not comprehending regarding what is meant by #85 that Rod referred to below (7/12)

I've looked in the January, March, April and December editions of 1936.

I've also done all of the 1934 and 1935 editions.

Unfortunately, as you can see there are a few holes in the holdings for 1936 and 1937. And, regrettably, the collection doesn't go back beyound 1934 - which is probably where any discussion would be found.

In fact, it was a very useful search. While barren from the WA Centenary prespective, I nevertheless found some interesting material on a few of my other special interests - not the least being on the Tasmania Submarine Cable issue of 1936.

Thank you for your updated references. The 1941 and the two 1942 ASM articles should be on the money. I think I have access to those ASMs. I'll post anything I find up here in due course.
