According to Ontario Post Offices by Smith, the post office was called Durance from 1859 to 1861 when it changed to Petrolea. In March 1906 it changed to Petrolia.
So, if Petrolia didn't change its name till after the Square Circle era, is it worthwhile contacting catalogue editor to update the spelling (to Petrolea) so newbies like me don't post silly questions on stamp fora?
From the Canadian Enc. "Petrolia was originally called Petrolea but its name was changed due to a clerical error. Both its original and current names reflect the discovery of oil in the area."
I found a reference from the Canadian Illustrated News in 1872 in which it is called Petrolia. So a little murky... I have read other local histories from the period in which Petrolia is used.
Most likely one would need to contact the local historical society for more clarity on this, if desired.
