I was recently going through my collection and I found this 3c Washington stamp. I'm still relatively new to collecting, but I believe that it is a Scott #65. It's really unfortunate if it is because the civil war era stamps seem really interesting. I'm not sure what the big black splotch is, because it doesn't really look like a cancel. It actually looks more like someone kissed the stamp wearing black lipstick or something.

Were perforation errors common in civil war era stamps?

It isn't an error. The stamps were printed in a sheet consisting of two large panes of 100 each, separated by an unperforated line that had to be cut at the post office, resulting in an unperforated edge on stamps either side of the centre line.

I rather like the visual of the Postmaster wearing black lipstick and kissing each piece of mail.

Thanks for the info everyone. The Postmaster kissing each letter is definitely a lot more entertaining than a cork cancellation!
