Folklore - 3v

Wiki - Aperschnalzen is an old tradition of competitive whipcracking revived in the first half of the 20th century in Bavaria and Salzburg that involves the rhythmic snapping and cracking of a whip up to 4 m in length. It is performed in small groups of 7, 9 or 11 members each. It has been thought that this tradition had a pagan meaning of "driving the winter away" by whipcracking.

Here is an earlier Danish Red Cross set of two semi-postals depicting royals. These stamps (Facit #s 447-8) were issued on August 24, 1964 and feature the three daughters of King Frederik IX (1899 - 1972). They are Princesses Margrethe (b. 1940), Benedikte (b. 1944), and Anne-Marie (b. 1946). As with the Denmark posting above, these are engravings by C. Slania.

On November 3, 1988 Denmark issued a set of two, large format stamps showing Danish paintings. The 4.10 kr value (Facit #959) depicts Peter Hansen's (1868-1928) Badande Pojkar 1902 (Bathing Boys 1902).

From wikipedia, "Peter Marius Hansen was a painter who became one of the 'Fynboeme' or 'Funen Painters' group (of four) living on the island of Funen."

Here are Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902), Carrie Catt (1859-1947) and Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) on the "100 Years of Progress of Women" issue of 1948 (Sc. 959). 1948 was the centennial of the Seneca Falls Convention, though it is not noted on the final stamp.

Interestingly, this stamp was originally planned to feature just two -- Stanton and Mott -- so would not have qualified for our current thread topic, except that well-placed complaints succeeded in getting Catt added within the last weeks before issue. The story is told and nicely illustrated in Kristine A. McIntosh, "The Fight for Women's Right to Vote," The American Philatelist, Oct. 2020 pp. 876-885.
