France,1966 This stamp (issued for the benefit of the Red Cross) depicts an ambulance woman,a wounded soldier and an officer at the battle of Solferino (1859) From Wikipedia : "The battle led the Swiss Jean-Henri Dunant to write his book, A Memory of Solferino. Although he did not witness the battle he toured the field following the battle and was greatly moved by what he saw. Thanks for showing the close-up image. The ways the engraver moved and changed the details on the soldier are interesting, I think. This September 14, 1929 2c stamp (Sc #680) of the USA commemorates the 135th anniversary of the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Ohio. The American forces in this 1794 battle were led by Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne (1745-1796), who was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Stamp depicts the Battle of Fallen Timbers Monument, which was created by American sculptor Bruce Saville (1893-1938). The monument was dedicated in 1929 and is located 2 miles west of Maumee, Ohio. From wikipedia, "The Battle of Fallen Timbers was the final battle of the Northwest Indian War, a struggle between Native American tribes affiliated with their British allies, against the nascent United States for control of the Northwest Territory. The battle took place amid trees toppled by a tornado near the Maumee River in northwestern Ohio at the site of the present-day city of Maumee, Ohio," |
