On March 10, 2000 Italy issued a five-stamp set to commemorate 'Holy Year 2000'. The 1000 lira/52c value (Sc #2338) from this set depicts a detail from Giotto's 1305 fresco painting Lamentation (The Mourning of Christ). The 200 cm x 185 cm (79" x 73") fresco is located on the north interior wall of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.   |

Here is the 40 lira value (Sc #1180) from Italy's April 18, 1975 three-stamp set commemorating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564). Stamp depicts Pitti Tondo (1503-4), a relief sculpture measuring 82cm x 82cm (32" x 32"). From wikipedia, The Pitti Tondo is a marble relief of the vVirgin and Child by Michelangelo in round or tondo form...the tondo was made in the year in which Michelangelo sculpted David, having found the time to dedicate to some other paid private commissions." The photo shows a casting made from the original work.   |

This November 10, 1983 250 lira value (Sc #1570) of Italy is from the Christmas set of three, which also commemorates the 500th birth anniversary of painter Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael). The painting featured is Madonna della Seggiola (Eng.: Madonna of the Chair). From wikipedia, "The Madonna della Seggiola (28"/71cm in diameter) is an oil on panel painting executed c. 1513-1514, and housed in the Palazzo Pitti Collection in Florence, Italy...It is still unknown who commissioned the painting; however, it has been in the Medici family since the 16th century."  |

On January 15, 1941 Switzerland issued its Historical Representations nine-stamp definitive series. The 50 centimes value (Sc #270) of this set shows sculptor James Vibert's 1914 Botticino limestone work Drei Eidgenossen (Eng.: The Three Confederates). From wikipedia, "( Drei Eidgenossen) is in Bern and forms the center of the domed hall of the Federal Palace...According to the founding legend, these men are said to have founded the Confederation (Switzerland) with the Ruetli oath."   |

One February 15, 2001 Vatican City issued a three-stamp set commemorating the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia. The Kingdom of Armenia was the first state to embrace the religion. The 1500 lira value (Sc #1177) of the set depicts three individuals including King Tiridates III (left) and St. Gregory the Illuminator (center). From wikipedia, "Gregory the Illuminator (Grigor Lusavorich c. 257-331) is the patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He was a religious leader who converted Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301."  |

Here is the 1300 lira value (Sc #1121) from Vatican City's October 12, 1999 'Travels of John Paul II in 1998' five-stamp set. Stamp features Pope John Paul II's October 2-4, 1998 trip to Croatia. Panel on the right side of the stamp says, "Here the story was not silent." The inscription ate the top of the cancellation is in Latin. It reads "IVBILAEVM A.D. 2000"/ The Jubilee of A.D. 2000. The original artwork appears to have been done in watercolor or gouache with black markers or pens for the line work.  |
