I feel like I'm pretty good at spotting vermillion, but as usual doubting myself. Orange and black or vermillion and black? BTW this stamp is on the Carpenter (Toppan and Carpenter) estate check I posted in the check section. In either case, I think it's a very nice looking example.
thanks

Find a copy of the Third Issue $2 (R145) and/or $5 (R148) for comparison as they are vermilion. If it matches one of those, you have it. If not, it is a shade of R135.

Thanks Eric, Don't have any of those but have some Interior Dept. Officials in Vermillion, would they be the same vermillion?

Phillystamper,

Send me a message with your shipping address and I'll send you a spare R145 or R148 I've got. It might not be in the greatest shape, but it will serve for side by side color comparisons.

Vermilion has always been my nemesis, (The Colour)
and, it seems, always gets mis-spelled, vermilion has only one "L"
Took me a while to train the fingers to type so.

Still not conquered the word "year", I almost always type "yera"
for some strange reason.

Thanks Rod for the heads up on Vermilion's correct spelling. And thanks Revenue Collector for your generous offer! DM sent. This all stems from my obsessing over a database inventory I've been doing on my collection with a OpenNumismat. Filling in all the details, catalogue numbers, colors, interesting observations etc. It serves a slight function as an insurance inventory but mainly it's an excuse to look a little harder at what i've gathered.

Vermilion is a shade that covers a broad spectrum due to the various bank note companies printing them. So the vermilion of the officials is not the same as the vermilion of the m&m's (which are not identical for all m&m companies for exactly this reason)and is not the same for the third issues. That's why one should use the other third issue values, as Eric suggested.

Revenue-Collector's generous comparison samples have arrived and I've done a side by side comparison and alas this R135 is not vermilion. Close but definitely not the same hue.
You can see the difference in this scan.
Thanks again everyone and especially you RC for the help.
