Basic Question About The Color Variation For A Washington 2 Cent Stamp

I just realized that I posted this original to the wrong section of the site.


Hello all,

I have a basic general question about the two stamps that came from the "Steele Box". For an untrained eye these stamps appear to be the same but yet the red are different. Could someone please tell me what the two colors are and if there is a Scortt number for each of the,

I realize that these are common stamps but I just don't understand the color thing?

The bottom stamp is a variety referred to as 'Lake' color, try #219D

Back then they had trouble matching colors between different print runs of the same stamp and reds were probably the most problematic.
