Yes, pretty fake. Many countries have (fake of forged) stamps with images of Queen Victoria that are so crude you just have to laugh. They are easy to research now with Google, and it's good knowledge to
have. EVERY collector should be aware of this.

Your suspicions were correct. Pay attention to the printing method used for classic-era stamps. The earliest were often engraved as a security method like currency/banknotes were. That process would typically be too much work for forgers, who would use lithography as the printing method of choice, like on your 1d gray.

Here, you've got genuine ones for comparison. Note that the forger wasn't able to reproduce the fine engine turning/line work and was very bad or lazy at copying the corner leaf patterns.
