Anyone have a clue what the negative word in this obliterator applied at Concord, New Hampshire in 1881 might be? It looks as though the first two letters are 'H' and 'U' (or 'Y') and the last two an 'E' (or 'C') followed by an 'R.' Its not the Postmaster's name. An acronym? 'Hunter' (although there's no rhyme or reason behind this interpolation of mine?

Although it looks a bit different than your cancel, there is a cancel from Concord, NH that is a circular negative "NUTTE" cancel with the letters inscripted negatively similar to yours. It is listed in Whitfield (#4508, page 152), and is backwards (right to left). I don't see yours listed, but it looks like the carver got yours right regarding orientation! |

Orstampman...thanks for doing some legwork on this marking. There are a couple of obliterators that are similar in style to this one in the literature, but no exact matches unfortunately. It seems as though we'll never know what the wording is. :( Since its not really a fit for any of my collections, I'm going to just go ahead and put it up for auction on eBay...sigh... |

I will propose a solution of NUTTER "Postmaster" and "county" cancels are more a relic of very small towns, where they had to purchase their own devices. In larger towns, there were clerks to do the grunt work, thus looking in the 1883 "Official Register of the United States ...". Volume II, Page 694, lists on the 5th line down, a clerk named William A. Nutter at Concord. |

Doc, You've used our research for your own benefit and now posted this item on Ebay. Wouldn't it be nice to notify us when it actually was listed? I chanced upon it by accident today. AT least consider a donation to SCF. |

Quote: Wouldn't it be nice to notify us when it actually was listed? Quote: AT least consider a donation to SCF. At $24.99 opening it is the most expensive listing of the 370 he, docgfd, has. It is also $16.00 over his second highest postal card and $21 more than his average postal card. If sold at opening, it would second to the item that sold for $42 during the last 90 days. Thus if it sells a $10 donation to support the SCF seems just about right. He has been on eBay over 20 years. I hope he doesn't start another thread like the one started by Stamps1962: http://goscf.com/t/77583Plus, the SCF has an area to sell stuff, it could have been posted there. |

Quote: Parcel, I was trying to be gentle, not grind him into the dirt. No dirt grinding intended. I was just looking at what might be a fair donation where he still wins more with the knowledge the SCF provided, thus allowing for SCF to be available to him, and us all, for the next FUN "what is this" question. I will say in his defense, he mentioned he was going to run it on eBay. He may have been unaware that saying out loud, "Hey I just listed this on eBay as, "----------" would be acceptable. He does have his eBay name and link in his details page. All that said, it is a cute item and interesting (clerk) postmark. Just not sure I want to add that new shoot to my philatelic tree. But I have a few days to decide before it closes. |

To post a researched study into someone's past ebay sales and current listings can come off as too strong. |

Just to set the record straight: 1) I decided this postal card wasn't a fit for my collections. It came out of a large lot I bought out of which I kept around 40 cards for myself and am slowly selling off those I have no desire to keep. I did mention early on that this would most likely be going to eBay. 2) In the listing, I gave full credit to John Becker for figuring out the obliterator as well as mentioning this Message Board, to whit: "On the StampCommunity message board, John Becker figured out this cancel, that was likely carved by William A. Nutter, named as one of the Concord Post Office clerks in the 1883 'Official Register,'..." 3) Is helping out a fellow collector here predicated on an item not being sold? Now? In the future? 4) I have made donations to the board in the past and will do so again in the future, not necessarily being timed to the sale of any particular item I opt not to keep for my own collection(s). 5) Yes, this item is starting at a higher price than all of my current listings. Its unusual enough that I think it deserves a higher start. For those keeping track for whatever reason, the items I have for sale currently are low to moderately priced as it all depends on what collections I'm breaking up for myself and what's left over. In the past, I've also sold items into the hundreds and low 1K's. So what? I try really hard to be honest in my descriptions and to treat buyers with respect and professionally and my feedback speaks for itself (albeit many being of the belief it is a flawed system). 6) As amazed as I remain about the knowledge and research ability of many on this board, I'm now equally amazed at how much of a broohaha a simple request for assistance has caused, as though there was some hidden, underhanded purpose in doing so. My most humble apologies to any angst I may have caused. |

Quote: To post a researched study into someone's past eBay sales and current listings can come off as too strong. There are six co-equal default ways to see a seller or sellers items, Time, first to close or last listed; Price, highest to lowest or lowest to highest, best match and by geographic distance. One must be chosen. That is coupled with one choice box to see current or completed items for the last 90 days. All is pre-organized public knowledge regardless if a registered eBay user or not and without regard to being logged in. Now I have never sold on eBay but I am aware sellers do have some control of the public facing information shown in the completed listings. The purpose of these two sets of lists, is for a person to find and purchase items at a fair price. In some cases eBay tells you what the average selling price is for similar items and suggests an offer price. Thus simply by looking for items to buy, and I have one of his in my cart, is no more price research that looking at a window and seeing it is light out and thinking it will be getting dark later then claiming such as time travel research. You John Becker properly , in my opinion, suggested the donation; I merely was offering a number value which I don't consider research, especially when I need not write anything down or do any written work to a bunch of numbers I see and sling around in my head. Do not accuse me of research when I do that, I was born that way, it takes away from those who are actually doing the work of research. |
