I have read in the catalogue that it says that 1404 (7,600,000), 1405 (7,600,000), 1406 (15,000,000), 1407 (15,000,000), 1407ai (10,000) were printed on Harrison Paper (H) and that 1407a (400,000) was printed on Coated Paper (C). The scarce souvenir sheet is 1407ai. However, it looks that as singles, the stamps from 1407ai would be similar to 1404, 1405, 1406, 1407 due to Harrison Paper (H) while the stamps from 1407a would be different due to Coated Paper (C). The catalogue mint total for 1407-1407 is $4.75 CDN while the catalogue mint for 1407a is $5.00 CDN. If 1407a (400,000) is on a different paper, wouldn't its singles be worth more if removed from the souvenir sheet where as those singles from 1407ai (10,000) would not? Are the papers correctly identified for the souvenir sheets?
Since I am not an expert on modern Canada stamp papers, I was hoping that someone who is an expert on this could help in answering whether or not 1407a was on Harrison paper and 1407ai was on Coated papers instead of the other way around which is how they are currently listed.
Harrison: blue-green tinge; curls, back of stamp has horizontal "lines" when viewed against a darker background (looks textured, almost like ribbed paper), Aug 83 H
Coated (name changed to Tullis Russell Coatings, Jan 98): slight blue-green tinge (sometimes it is pale), looks like a mixture of "pulp" and has a darker tone (beige). Slater is slightly darker than Coated. Dec 90 C
For used singles, Slater and Coated papers are almost identical.
Slater: light cream-coloured gum, looks like a mixture of "pulp" and has a darker tone (beige). Slater is slightly darker than Coated. Feb 88 to Jan 92 S
Both the sheet stamps (1404-1407) and the signature souvenir sheets (1407ai) were printed on Harrison paper. It was originally planned to make all of the souvenir sheets with signatures but their printing did not go well. Thus, only 10,000 of the best printed were saved and the rest were destroyed. Then, the rest of the souvnenir sheets (1407a) were printed without the signature but on Coated Papers paper instead.
Thus, the stamps with Coated Papers paper are much scarcer than the stamps with Harrison paper since the stamps with Coated Papers paper are only from the souvenir sheet (1407a) without the signature. It seems that Canada catalogues price the souvenir sheet (1407a) without the signature close to that of a set of sheet stamps (1404-1407).
15,000,000 stamps on Harrison paper. 400,000 stamps on Coated Papers paper. 15,000,000/400,000=37.5(x scarcer?)
Jogil I know every ones computer screen is not like every one else's screen. Is the 1407ai a yellowish colour ink backing..?? Is the 1407a a greenish colour ink backing..??
Hi Robert, The GIMP color picker tool defaults to a single pixel but you can configure it to use a group of pixels. If you set it to use a group of pixels, the software will average the pixels in the group and display the average. With 64 millions possible pixel colors, the software has plenty to work with!
How many pixels are used in what you show above? And how do you make sure that you select the exact same pixel location between the two images? To test, pick a slightly different place on the image and see how it then changes the numbers shown. Don
When you use the color picker, it is using a single pixel (by default). So moving the picker just a millimeter will change the color, each pixel is a slightly different color.
GIMP supports increasing the color picker tool to use a group of pixels. Double click the color picker tool and this dialog box will open. Click to option to turn on Sample Average and then use the slider to set the radius (which is actually the size of the group of pixels) it will analyze.
Having the color picker tool work with a larger group of pixels will be much more representative of the entire sheet than a single or small group of pixels. Don
Scott/Unitrade 1404-1045, 1405a were issued se-tenant in a pane/sheet of 25 stamps with 13 x 1404 (Montreal) and 12 x 1405 (Ville-Marie). The total quantity of both stamps together was 15,000,000 according to Canada Post Stamp Details. 15,000,000 stamps / 25 stamps per pane/sheet = 600,000 panes/sheets 600,000 panes/sheets x 13 stamps (1404) = 7,800,000 stamps (Montreal 1404) (Scott/Unitrade has 7,600,000 stamps.) 600,000 panes/sheets x 12 stamps (1405) = 7,200,000 stamps (Ville-Marie 1405) (Scott/Unitrade has 7,600,000 stamps.) Scott/Unitrade 1404-1405, 1405a Canada Post Philatelic Agency pane/sheet with printer's inscriptions Scott/Unitrade 1404-1405, 1405a Canada Post Post Office pane/sheet with printer's inscriptions removed (trimmed off).
For se-tenant sheet stamp 1405a (with stamp pairs 1404-1405, 1405-1404, 1404/1405, 1405/1404), there would be at the most 7,200,000 se-tenant sheet pairs (14,400,000 sheet stamps). Se-tenant stamp pair combinations from souvenir sheets can be 1407-1406, 1405-1404, 1406/1405.
Breakdown of the different stamp paper varieties by their different stamp papers:
1404 42c - 7,800,000 sheet stamps with Harrison Paper (HP) (Montreal) 1405 42c - 7,200,000 sheet stamps with Harrison Paper (HP) (Ville-Marie) 1406 48c - 15,000,000 sheet stamps with Harrison Paper (HP) (Cartier) 1407 84c - 15,000,000 sheet stamps with Harrison Paper (HP) (Columbus)
1407ai $2.16 - 10,000 signature souvenir sheets with Harrison Paper (HP) (42c x 10,000 stamps, 42c x 10,000 stamps, 48c x 10,000 stamps, 84c x 10,000 stamps) (The souvenir sheets have se-tenant stamps.)
1407a $2.16 - 400,000 souvenir sheets with Coated Paper Papers (CPP) (42c x 400,000 stamps, 42c x 400,000 stamps, 48c x 400,000 stamps, 84c x 400,000 stamps) (The souvenir sheets have se-tenant stamps.)
Breakdown of the different stamp paper varieties by their total number of stamps:
Total 42c (Montreal) with Harrison Paper (HP) = 7,810,000 (7,800,000 sheet stamps + 10,000 signature souvenir sheet stamps) Total 42c (Montreal) with Coated Papers Paper (CPP) = 400,000 (souvenir sheet stamps) (19.525x)
Total 42c (Ville-Marie) with Harrison Paper (HP) = 7,210,000 (7,200,000 sheet stamps + 10,000 signature souvenir sheet stamps) Total 42c (Ville Marie) with Coated Papers Paper (CPP) = 400,000 (souvenir sheet stamps) (18.025x)
Total 48c (Cartier) with Harrison Paper (HP) = 15,010,000 (15,000,000 sheet stamps + 10,000 signature souvenir sheet stamps) Total 48c (Cartier) with Coated Papers Paper (CPP) = 400,000 (souvenir sheet stamps) (37.525x)
Total 84c (Columbus) with Harrison Paper (HP) = 15,010,000 (15,000,000 sheet stamps + 10,000 signature souvenir sheet stamps) Total 84c (Columbus) with Coated Papers Paper (CPP) 400,000 (souvenir sheet stamps) (37.525x)
15,000,000 stamps / 25 stamps per sheet = 600,000 sheets. Each sheet of 25 stamps has 13 x SC # 1404 and 12 x SC # 1405. Thus, there can be 12 se-tenant pairs (SC #1405a) of 24 stamps (12 x SC # 1404 and 12 x SC # 1405) in each sheet at the most (and 1 x SC # 1404 left over).
12 se-tenant pairs (SC # 1405a) in each sheet x 600,000 sheets = 7,200,000 se-tenant pairs (SC # 1405a) at most consisting of 24 se-tenant stamps in each sheet x 600,000 sheets = 14,400,000 se-tenant stamps (and 1 not se-tenant stamp in each sheet x 600,000 sheets = 600,000 not se-tenant stamps).
