In the latest Linn's (4/11/22), there was a report from Scott English about the APS website traffic.

But, English said, that growth "brought increased scrutiny
and penalties from search engines," which resulted in
drops for search impressions (from 1.6 million per month to
650,000 per month) and web traffic (from 45,000 per month
to 40,000 per month)

Any idea on why there are penalties but Search Engine Optimization can be a constant activity - not a one time task?

"Increased penalties" could result because the SEO was over-done. Alternatively, it could be that the search engines are rewarding other sites at the expense of the APS.

I addressed this on another forum, but I'll address it here as well. We have a content-rich website and when the Newsroom was added, it helped increase traffic even further. SEO is a daily activity for us, but the website age has its own issues within the SEO algorithms of search engines.

The resulting factors are governing our search impressions as algorithm rules change regularly.

As an aside, I am routinely contacted by APS members with a myriad of questions. There are no rules to contacting me. That typically yields more clarity than crowdsourcing my comments and hope I catch them.
