hi all,

i am looking for, ideally a 2 sided but 1 sided correspondence is OK too

so a group of letters between parent/wife (or so) and a soldier, confederate or union.

in covers would be great, but if not possible letters only are ok too

i am looking at the various auctions and not seeing any, does anyone know where to find something this?

thank you in advance...just do not know where to look anymore

eBay gives plenty of loose letters but non matching groups. and books with prints, I am looking for originals

They do come up from time to time in the auctions, especially the ones dealing with the Civil War, anywhere from 10-30 letters. Just have to get an eye on the auctions.

I have a letter and cover dated April 4, 1860 from a cadet at the Navel Academy to his sister.., in Nashville!! I know that doesn't fit your criteria but In the letter he writes about the possibility of war and some of his classmates becoming enemies (my words).

Most correspondence groups from any era go in only one direction.

Groups of civil war letters (and diaries) with "good content" are highly sought by military history collectors and prices are typically aggressive.

Not impossible, but less likely as one goes back in time, although there are some interesting collections of literary correspondence. My parents' letters to one another during WWII survived for sixty years, but my mother destroyed them before she died.

Are you looking for letters for your own collection or for some sort of research? If for yourself, check on the various auctions as mentioned above. If for research purposes, some of the US universities and museums have batches of letters that are digitalized (used to be microfilmed) and possibly available through the internet.

I have not dealt with her, but Trish Kaufman has written many detailed articles about the contents of Civil War letters.

As she is a dealer, you should contact her.
