They're fun, aren't they? I may have to try to construct something to display them on. Actually a fair number of usable vintage hinges, which are rarely obtainable here, in the tins. |

Rodg - I'd guess that the bulk of them are 1920s-1960s. I'll need to have a go at researching some of the companies. |

Love those old hinge tins especially - would look great in a stamp curio display cabinet |

Got them via a recent antiques and collectables auction. I was way off on the tobacco tins that I also bid on. |

Thank you. Old Lincoln albums are very attractive, and the more luxurious versions usually included a full catalogue at the back. |

Somewhere I have a Stanley Gibbons green tin, found in an auction lot, but I used up all hinges within. They were unfolded hinges neatly stacked side-by-side with each bundle wrapped with a paper band. |

I love the old style, particularly un-folded, hinges and how the were packaged! As a few others, I have seen a few old boxes (unfortunately empty of hinges, but currently holding stamps) in large lots. I would give my eye teeth to find any as fancy as the ones in your photo! And then find original hinges in them???? I'd be in heaven!
I have a search on eBay for "Unfolded hinges" and the search usually brings up nothing (well, nothing that is actually unfolded hinges - the failed search results in all kinds of hinges, just not what I was really asking for) or maybe a single lot. I have been using this search for about 2 years now and am yet to buy a lot that appeals to me. The search goes on... |

Very cool! I noted a few of them say "Stamp Mounts" are they actually mounts or hinges? Did hinges used to be called mounts? Also wondering if these tins are empty or still have the product. It's always been remarkable to me how many stamp hinge manufacturers there used to be compared to how many there are now (just one I think), I've always been curious about how they are manufactured--can't be too complicated if so many people were making them.

In the era of these boxes, the only real form of mounting stamps in albums was the hinge. One would 'mount' one's stamps into an album with a 'hinge'. One word focuses on the action, while the other word focuses on the item. Since there really was nothing else, I suspect the terms were interchangeable. |
