photo from: https://www.castanetphil.fr/2017/03...-octroi.htmlAt the beginning of the 16th century, a Portuguese squadron of 13 ships crisscrossed the Indian Ocean; One of these ships went adrift, and its commander, Diego Diaz, was therefore the first European to discover the Big Island on August 10, 1500. In February 1506, Admiral Herman Suarez recognized the place and so Antomabokala, former capital of Ankarana, acquired its name of Diego Suarez, which comes from the contraction of the first name of the captain and the name of the Admiral . In 1635, the bay was mentioned for the first time under this name by the French pilot Berthelot, author of an oriental map of Africa and Madagascar. Cover Diego Suarez/Paris 1902

Beautiful! Any more details about the cover? Is it philatelic in nature? |

xavierstripe: I would not consider the cover as philatelic really.Ok ;you might ask:why not just paste a 1Fr stamp ? Maybe the sender had lower denomination stamps in his possesion and the post office completed the rest. Or maybe higher denominations were out of stock? Or maybe the sender liked using many stamps..
Cupram; That's right.. |

My favorite stamps of Diego Suarez are these provisional Lithographed stamps of 1890.Governor Froger authorized these stamps on Sept. 8 1890. They were printed awaiting new issues from France. They only lasted less than a year. All remainders were incinerated. The majority of used stamps have CTO's.Many forgeries exist. |
