Hi,

While looking through Australian stamps, I came across another cancel that looked interesting.

Does anyone have information about this cancel? Again, I assume it has minimal value, but RAAF cancels don't seem terribly common (to me at least, assuming it is an RAAF cancel).

I know you can't see the full cancel, but I can what looks like "(part of A).AF. P.O. KI(part of N?)(part of G?)". I don't see an period after the second "A".

I used https://www.stampboards.com/viewtop...f=33&t=38094 to narrow it down. I don't know much about RAAF cancels, but Kingaroy was the only RAAF post office on that link that I could find that started with "K", though the link says "Kingaroy R.A.A.F. P.O.", which would be a different word order than this cancel.

Any information is appreciated!

Hmm...so more than minimal value....RR isn't bad!

Thank you for the info! I actually have that document, but didn't even think of looking in it (didn't make the Queensland connection I guess).

What about similar documents for the other Australian states? Do they exist online? I like having the scarcity ratings, as it helps figure out whether something is common or not.

I've found a Western Australia Post Office List (no scarcity rating though) from the Western Australia Study Group.
I've also found some documents for CDS scarcity of Tasmanian Post offices pre-1913 and 1913-1988, from the Tasmanian Philatelic Society.

Just wondering if there are other resources online for getting a general idea of scarcity of the different postmarks.
I've seen list of post offices for numeral cancels on Stampboards, though I think only the Victoria list had scarcity ratings. I haven't really seen CDS lists though, other than what I mentioned.

You will get better answers.

But the Australian state/island Tasmania is full of amazing info on post marks rarities.

bmbmbm,

Any current rarity ratings for Victoria or New South Wales numeral cancellations that you see online will usually have been copied from one of these beautiful big hard-cover book by Hugh Freeman. Glossy pages, full rarity ratings and images for almost every type, they are the gold standard resource for NSW and Victoria.

THE BARRED NUMERALS OF VICTORIA NEW EDITION BY HUGH FREEMAN

THE NUMERAL CANCELLATIONS OF NEW SOUTH WALES SECOND EDITION

The higher rating numerals can sell for many hundreds or even thousands of dollars at auction.

Yes, I realize that. I've seen references to those books in various places. I think there are some other ones for other states as well. Thank you for the links. At least from the links above, it seems like it would cost almost $200 per book, including shipping, which is too expensive at the moment. Maybe I could find them second-hand or something.

Specifically though, I wondering if any online resources (PDFs, forum posts, blogs, etc) exist that would help give an idea of scarcity (similar to the Tasmanian document, Queensland document, or the Stampboards posts).

I don't really need fully detailed varieties of every CDS cancel type (I don't have a large amount of material), but just a general idea of post offices/places that are keepers if you happen to come across them.

bmbmbm,

The Phoenix Auctions website is an excellent reference tool and shows ratings for some datestamps, especially those from Victoria. It also shows Post Office opening and closing dates, which can be a pointer to rarity.

Choose 'Reference Tools' at top left and then 'Post Office Reference'.
