The marks around the top left of the lower left stamp are artifacts of scanning. (Pretty sure...I'll double check.) |

If you agree it is the time, I find it difficult to understand how the clerks have to adjust their hammers every 2 hrs, for what gain? I don't understand how time recorded is of any use on modern mail. Computer / meter printings the exception. (Non manual handling)
I am assuming these mechanical slogans, would have to be adjusted manually.

Machine cancels, probably, have some kind of cylinder with the times. It would not surprise me if no manual adjustment is required for any of these date and time slugs. |

He, he, he In 1985 there were not as many automatisms as today and there were no computers here. Letters were placed on a sloping tray to the right of the automatic canceller. Being inclined by their own weight, they entered a spring that sucked them in and that same spring made the roller rotate. You can compare the 1985 system to any paper shredder today. The central paper sensing spring causes the blades to roll and draw the paper into the cassette.

Glad it arrived! Too bad about the cancel, usually the local PO uses a nice circular date stamp they have. |

I am not too bothered about that pen cancel, I'll keep the cover. It is the black felt pen scribble that gets me Was a super 1p40 stamp. Delighted. PS: SWLF = Sydney West Letter Facility (Located in Strathfield) |

Good - 2 weeks from rural Ontario to Perth - not too bad. Sometimes letters to Ohio (just across Lake Erie) take longer than that. |
