I also see that the second post mark is not aug 25 but aug 26. I think they were expecting the second cancel to go on the left side cancelling scott 331a. thoughts?
Yeah, I think you are right. Having gotten the FDC of the 729 (25 May 1933), I suspect Mr. Feldman attempted to get the 731a imperf cancelled on 25 August 1933. But he apparently did not get a clerk to hand stamp the imperf that day, and it wound up being machine cancelled the next day, and atop the original 25 May cancel of the 729. Frustrated his plans I guess.
I bet he tried the same combo FDC gambit with the 728 and 730a. Wonder how that turned out....
