I do not believe this is an insured cover. 1. An insured cover would have been conspicuously marked on the front. 2. The minimum insurance fee in 1933 was 5 cents.
The label on the back does not resemble any USPOD form I am aware of. It looks more like a privately applied label to seal the flaps on a overweight letter caught for postage due at the destination.

There were private insurers of mail then. Often a label was supplied to mark the envelope covered by private insurance. As with today's private mail insurance, you pay the company, not the Post Office. John Becker is correct about to USPOD fees he mentions. |

Hi John, thanks for the feed back. But Does it say "insured" written on the label? Also the label is from carlyle which I think took over the huey post office. odd that some would have a huey IL stamp? plus a private carlyle label. this envelope is very crisp, it doesn't have creases or bends from being oversized as well.

I like the direction that PPG is taking of private insurance.
Adding, Jim Forte's website shows the Huey and Carlyle post offices open continuously during this period. So not sure where you are getting the idea of any "taking over" of post offices. It just doesn't happen that way.
Building on the private insurance explanation, the Huey marks were all applied privately as part of the insurance and this cover never was anywhere near the Huey post office (a hand stamp with a town name and magenta ink are not exclusive to the USPOD). Then mailed at Carlyle where the original postage was canceled.
Also, note I said "overweight", not "oversized". All it takes is a smidgen over 1 ounce to incur the second rate. A couple of coins between stiffener boards will do that easily. |

Thanks John, I meant now the location of the Huey post office ( picture I sent) is called the Carlyle post office. Not huey any more. Yeah pretty sure he was selling indian head cents. |

I have several labels for private insurance, both for letter material as well as for use on parcels. The unused examples are usually mutli-items on one page. You remove one and record the use on the stub which remains. If there is a problem, the sender makes a claim with the insurance company. The usually have the word insurance (or insured) or indemnity on the label.
The unused items or used off cover/package are scare with the usages such as yours difficult to find. They trade at a price NOT consistent with scarcity but rather consistent with lack of interest (demand).
I apologize in advance for not posting pictures. I have several banker's boxes of "parcel post related" unsorted goodies as well as even more bankers boxes of items needing to be sorted into the big divisions of material such as "parcel post related." Life now does not provide me the time to look for items to photograph. |
