Thank you 64idgaf. 1383 it is. Thank you Bobby De LaRue, at last I have been able to help someone too. Even if it was only to point them to a earlier post.

Hi Pshann,
I got my list from a previous posting on this board by Traralgon 3844 on 8/2/2010 headed State of Victoria Barred Numerical Cancels & Rarity Ratings. I can find the post again but can't copy the URL

I am still finding numerical cancels in dad's stamps. 52 is clear on this one, but there is also clearly room for another digit. Can someone please identify it for me.

One more. This is probably 1431 SURREY HILLS But is it type 14B? I doubt it since that would make it.....RRRR. However I would love it to be Surrey Hills since there is a family a connection. Soon after WW1 my grandmother moved from Brunswick to Surrey Hills for the fresh air, (12 kms from the city) on the doctors advice. Two of her daughters had TB..
Sorry about the double image, I guess the postmaster had the shakes.

A bit of 'chatter' from double impressions is reasonably common.

Hopefully someone can help with confirming the numerals.

The 1431 that you have is not rated and is Surrey Hills.
The rarer 14B has Roman Numerals on top (MCCCC) and 31 underneath. The numbers and letters are much thicker in the 14B.

The other one that starts with 52? is trickier. The picture is a bit blurred. Can you make out any of the letters on the left of the numbers. I'm leaning towards Harrietville, Healsville or Bowenvale.

Thanks StevieG at least I have the connection to Surrey Hills You have also solved this number for me. It is 1414. But that raises two questions. Do people collecting barred numerals also collect postage duty? And is this 1414 EAST MELBOURNE .....RRR type 14A.?

They certainly ought to!

I can't stress this enough. Anyone collecting the numeral cancellations of the Australian colonies should be acquiring items on anything but 1d and 2d stamps as and when they become available.

Numerals on postage dues are anything but common. They add even more colour and depth to a collection.

The MCCCC/14 you show looks like the "not rated" duplex cancel. There appears to be a second strike showing some lettering (EAST) on the right side. The one that is rated RRR is Type 14B according to Freeman and White. The number as you said is East Melbourne.
Agree with earlier comment that any example of a barred numeral is worth keeping.
The MD/60 matches very well with the Geelong West duplex. It is not rated.
